I'm that 5G guy. I've actually been here for every "G." I've reviewed well over a thousand products during 18 years working full-time at PCMag.com, including every generation of the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy S. I also write a weekly newsletter, Fully Mobilized, where I obsess about phones and networks.

We put dozens of phones a year through rigorous testing to find out which ones live up to their ad copy and which are just phoning it in. If you're buying a phone on Verizon right now, these are the best you can get.

Verizon lost to T-Mobile in our 2022 Best Mobile Networks results, but it might not stay behind for long. The carrier's big launch of C-Band 5G in 46 regions of the country could make a significant difference, as long as you have a C-band compatible phone. You can check availability on Verizon's coverage map(Opens in a new window). Speed probably isn't why you're coming to or staying with Verizon, though. The carrier historically performs well in rural areas.

Verizon still has a selection of voice phones, which it calls "basic phones." Many of these are off-brand devices that were custom-built for Verizon; they're inexpensive, but most of them aren't very good.

The primary exceptions are more expensive: the Kyocera DuraXV Extreme and the Sunbeam F1. The DuraXV Extreme is rugged and loud; the F1 comes in three feature-restricted versions for folks who really don't want web browsing or email on their phones. Both are good choices.

When it launched back in 2017, the iPhone X made headlines for being the first $1,000 flagship phone from Apple. These days we're used to seeing $1,000 phones, and a few phones are even cutting it close to $2,000, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. But when the iPhone X launched, the sticker shock was real.

Thankfully, these days you can pick up the iPhone X for a lot less. Apple stopped selling the iPhone X in 2018, and you won't find it new from any carriers anymore, but you can pick one up on the second-hand market for $250 or even less. Buying an iPhone X now means getting a sweet deal on a phone that once broke the bank.

Although Apple has evolved the design of the iPhone since the iPhone X came out, the phone still manages to look and feel modern. The iPhone X was the first all-screen iPhone, the first iPhone to ditch the Home button, and it was the device that introduced us to the now infamous iPhone notch.

To be fair, Apple has made some changes to the design since the iPhone X's inception. With the release of the iPhone 12, the iPhone's screen size grew slightly, from 5.8 inches to 6.1 inches, and the phone's edges went from rounded to the flat, squared-off design we have today. With the iPhone 13, the iPhone got a little thicker and heavier, and we finally got a slightly smaller notch.

Not only did you lose an expensive device, but not having access to your phone can mean losing your plane tickets and itineraries and access to your bank accounts or credit cards. Plus, contacting someone to get the help you need becomes difficult.

A backup phone can be a great insurance policy when things don't go to plan. And picking up an iPhone X as a backup phone means getting more peace of mind whether you're at home or on the other side of the world.

Getting an extra phone can also be a great way to separate your work life from your personal life. iOS features like Do Not Disturb and Focus can help you get some of your time back, but there's nothing better than a good old-fashioned work phone. Having a separate work device means when you clock out, so does your phone.

Even the latest iPhones are still an evolution of the design that debuted on the iPhone X. Plus, in many ways, the base iPhone 14 still feels remarkably similar to the iPhone X. The iPhone X blew people's minds when it was new, but it can still be a great phone today.

Best iOS smartphone Apple iPhone 14 Pro The iPhone 14 Pro features the biggest changes to Apple's flagship line in years, including the new Dynamic Island that replaces the polarizing notch with a pill-shaped cutout to house the front cameras for Face ID.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra has pretty much everything you could want or need on a super premium flagship phone. It features a gorgeous 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a speedy Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, longer battery life and a built-in S Pen for all your drawing and notetaking needs. New for 2023 is a huge 200MP sensor for the phone's main cam, which comes with improved OIS, 8K/30fps video recording and some additional photography tools in the Expert RAW app.

We've painstakingly put every smartphone to the test, with the best coverage in the UK, so we can help you make a buying decision. Our best smartphone roundup is always kept up to date, so be sure to check back often.

The Pixel 7 dropped to its lowest-ever price. Usually retailing for around 533, Google's terrific flagship (listed below in position number three) is currently just 475. We don't know how long this deal will last, so it's best to buy now if you've been eyeing up a new smartphone for 2023. Amazon Was 533 (average price) Now 475 Buy Now

Our favourite OnePlus smartphone has also dropped in price. The OnePlus 10 Pro is now just 600 for a limited time. That's not quite the cheapest we've seen, but this is still a steal at this price. Amazon Was 689 Now 600 Buy Now

Finding the right smartphone for your budget can be tricky, especially when there are so many expensive contracts to sift through. To make things easier, we've rounded up everything you need to know about buying your perfect smartphone, as well as what you need to know about picking out a contract.

Generally speaking, buying a phone unlocked and SIM-free is the best option, as you can use any SIM you like and sell the phone when you want to upgrade, but you do have to have the money upfront. If you can't stomach the upfront cost, go with a contract, but work out the total cost of it over the period to make sure you aren't getting ripped off: if you can afford a bit more upfront, you'll most likely save over the contract's length.

You'll only find iOS on Apple's own smartphones. Typically, iOS gets apps first and is a wonderfully slick OS. It isn't as customisable as Android, but there's no doubt that it's incredibly easy to use.

Android has a much wider reach than its Apple counterpart and is found on the majority of smartphones on the market. There are many different versions of Google's operating system available, though. Generally speaking, you'll want a phone running Android 11 or higher, as older versions will now be outdated. Manufacturers often customise their own versions of Android, which means that the experience can differ between handsets.

As most smartphones are controlled entirely with their touchscreens, the size and quality of a handset's display are very important. A larger screen will make everything easier to read and is particularly useful for web browsing, but a big display makes for a big phone that you may find harder to carry around.

Most smartphones are powered by octa-core processors these days. As a general rule, the clock speed of a processor (measured in GHz) shows how fast the phone is and will give you a rough indication of how fluid the operating system feels, as well as how the phone copes with running apps and games.

Alternatively, lengthy battery life is one of the biggest things you need to look for when picking up a new phone. Our battery tests help you make the right decision about the handset that's right for you, but generally speaking the bigger the phone's battery capacity (measured in mAh), the longer it will last on a single charge.

Generally speaking, a minimum of 64GB of onboard storage is fine if there's a microSD slot, but you'll soon find the internal storage filling up quickly. With more of an emphasis on smartphone cameras in recent years, it's likely that your Instagram snaps will be the main culprit in using up your storage so we recommend at least 64GB to get you started.

Next up is battery life. This is where we use our in-house video rundown test, which displays a looped video with flight mode enabled and the screen set to 170cd/m2 brightness. We simply play the video and record the timestamp when we first boot up the phone after it runs dry. A phone's cameras are put to the test in a variety of shooting scenarios, including scenic shots, low-light and indoor photography as well as rapid video panning in a range of modes.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is a flagship smartphone of rare distinction. The most complete high-end handset the company has produced to date, it might cost you a bit more than other handsets on this list, but the S23 Ultra is the very best Android smartphone currently on the market.

Smartphone flagships are getting better and better, but with these top-notch innovations comes an increased cost. Paying almost four figures for the latest top-end smartphone simply isn't doable for most consumers, but thankfully Xiaomi's Redmi Note 11 provides a flagship experience at a vastly reduced cost. 041b061a72
